Sprite Editors

To make good sprites you need good sprite editing tools. A good sprite editing tool allows you to edit a single pixel at a time. You may already have one of the most used, Microsoft Paint.

  • Graphics Gale - most likely the best sprite editing tool. Graphics Gale has a free version.
  • Microsoft Paint - Included in all windows operating systems. Good for simple sprites.
  • mtPaint - Designed for creating icons and pixel based artwork. It can edit indexed palette or 24 bit RGB images and offers basic painting and palette manipulation tools. Licensed under GPL, avaible for Windows and Linux. Runs on older hardware(200MHz/16MB RAM).
  • Paint.net - Paint.net is a very good sprite editor with a lot of functions.
  • Adobe Photoshop is also a very good program with many many functions which makes spriting very easy.
